Newspaper

The Carlow Chronicle student staff meets three days a week during activity period. Students in grades six through eight are encouraged to join the newspaper staff. Four newspapers are published each school year.

The purpose of the newspaper is to enable students to gain additional practice in academic areas such as reading, writing, language, math, and media technology skills. Participation in the newspaper creates student pride in themselves, the school and our community. It encourages positive relationships between teachers and students beyond the classroom environment and permits parents to read about the school from a student's perspective.

Editors for The Carlow Chronicle discuss stories, school events, and conduct interviews. It is the students' responsibility to set up dates and meeting times with those persons they are to interview. Photographers and artists follow the same procedure. Layout procedures and specific formats are taught. Most of the work is based on student interest, investigation, and initiative.

The students are challenged to complete the scheduled work by the publisher's deadline. Completing the work on time is a test of the skills they are learning and the professionalism they are developing. During the process, students discover they are having fun as well.

Being a staff member of the newspaper teaches students to communicate effectively with peers, teachers, and administrators as well as members of the Carlow University community.
