“To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake it is necessary to stand out in the cold.”

~Aristotle

Café/Daily 5: We finished reading 21 Balloons this week and everyone enjoyed creating the room of their dreams with amazing inventions. We also began writing our Alien Stories, where we are practicing hooking the readier, incorporation of detail…those all-important adverbs and adjectives, as well as figurative language.  Ask your child about his/her alien and how that alien was created!

Math: Students solved several 3-digit story problems, developing new strategies or adjusting some of the strategies we had learned in Unit 1. For extra practice, students went on an Addition Hunt and solved 3-digit addition equations that were hiding around the room. We are now starting to work on 3-digit subtraction story problems. We worked as a group to go over subtraction rules and what to look for in a word problem that tells us it’s subtraction.

Science: We have had a blast learning about the Solar System and Simple Machines.  Groups have been working on their Solar System Project, gathering information about their planets and everyone was introduced to Glogster, a virtual poster, where they will eventually post their facts. We ended the week with the “Go the Distance Challenge.”
