“One machine can do the work of fifty men.  No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man.”

~Elbert Hubbard

Café/Daily 5:  This week we began reading Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World.  This is a wonderful story about a young boy named Justin who lives in a household of women.  He lacks confidence and thinks housework is for women until he has the opportunity to spend time with his grandfather.  Justin learns so much from his grandfather throughout the entire novel.  This is an excellent story to portray “growth of a character” from beginning to end.  As February is Black History Month, this story ties in nicely as Justin learns about his African American Heritage.

Math:  We began Unit 4: Measurement & Fractions. Students reviewed telling time, starting with the hour, the half-hour, and then 5-minute increments. We practiced reading and writing time to the minute on analog and digital clocks. We continued our practice by learning and playing a new workplace; Tic-Tac-Tock.

Social Studies: We finished learning about the 13 colonies, ending with notetaking on the southern colonies.  Our focus then became Jamestown.  Everyone was introduced to History Globe- Jamestown, an online adventure! The students acted as the Captain of the Jamestown Colony to see if they could do any better than the real colonist did.  They had a copy of the London Company’s Instructions as well as the opportunity to ask a fellow colonist and or Native American for advice.  Everyone enjoyed watching the first two episodes of Liberty Kids:
